Julian Ching-Chun Su
One of the most vigorously active and influential Choir Conductors in Taiwan, Julian Ching-Chun Su graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Chinese Culture University in 1981, followed by a Master’s degree in Music in Choral Conducting at Westminster Choir College in 1993. During his study for his Master’s, he studied with the world renowned chorus conductor, Dr. Joseph Flummerfelt. Su is now a member of the faculty at Department of Music, Fu-Jen Catholic University. His choir experience through out his student years includes: Assistant Conductor of the Taipei Philharmonic Chorus; Conductor of Taipei Madrigal Chorus (founded in 1985), Tamkang University Chorus, Chinese Culture University Chorus, Chin-Sui Choir, and Univoice Chorus in New York; making up a solid foundation for his future career.
After returning to his homeland in 1994, Su has devoted himself in promoting Taiwan choral music. Under his meticulous guidance and instruction, we have seen significant progress in Taipei Men Glee (founded in 1994), Formosa Singers (1994 until present), Taipei Joy Female Choir, and the Müller Chamber Choir, etc. His relentless endeavor in promoting Taiwan choral music was recognized and awarded Taiwan Cultural Devotion Prize by Taiwan Care Incorporated of the US in 1998. To help root firmly the Taiwan choral music education, the annual Taiwan Youth Chorus Music Camp has been held since 2006, and Formosa Youth Singers was founded in 2008.
To embody his vision for Taiwan choral music, Su has invited musicians worldwide, including Tyzen Hsaio, I-to Loh, Mei-chun Chen, etc., to present their choral music creation; and gathered top score composers to interpret Taiwan folksongs anew and inject into them new life while preserving the essence that is uniquely Taiwanese. After a decade’s hard work, over a hundred of mixed and equal voices scores were published. In recent years, Taiwan music has shone through the borders with Su’s participation in prestigiously renowned international music festivals and contests. He was invited as one of the judges at the 20th Takarazuka International Chamber Chorus Contest in 2003. In 2005, he led Formosa Singers and won two golds and one silver at the 21st Takarazuka International Chamber Chorus Contest, and in 2007, conducted the Müller Chamber Choir that won a gold and a silver at the 22nd Takarazuka Chorus Contest. Su was then invited by Church United Choir in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2007 as the lecturer in a choral music seminar and instructed Master classes in conducting skills. In the same year, Su gave conducting master class and introduced Taiwan choral music at Karuizawa Choral Festival in Japan. In 2008, he was invited by Crystal Children Chorus Music Camp of San Francisco, USA as the guest conductor.
Julian Su’s contribution to the development of contemporary Taiwan choral music is second to none.
